Sketching is a way to express myself through some lines drawn by a pencil or a pen on a blank piece of paper. It is a traditional way to explore and play with different ideas. As an architecture student sketching helps me think and imagine easily and experiment more.

A sketch can be anything and mean anything, it can be a couple of lines or a finished portrait or some drawing made looking at some reference. Sketching can be used to explore capture and experiment. Sketching can help us understand things in detail rather than just clicking an image of some place. It helps us notice details, draw them to understand and also involves a feel of being present. Sketching can be defined as a mirror to out emotions as we go on drawing our mood reflects on the paper through our line weights and pencil strokes we use. It is a stress buster and is a form of art which feels more like a hobby.

developing plans and experimenting with shapes

I like sketching because it allows me to keep things raw and rough. It also develops the sense of proportion and improves hand eye co ordination. It is one of the most effective ways to express. Once we get comfortable with sketching, we start to develop our own style of sketching and choose what we feel important about the thing we are sketching. In my architectural studies it helps me more in developing concepts. It is important for me to understand the points and develop some visuals from them and initially sketching helps me a lot to sketch whatever comes to my mind.

studying proportion

Sketching has become old fashioned it seems with the coming up of all the computer based software. These softwares are good to make the final model or the drawings but the initial idea and the process can be much more explored with the help of hand sketching and it provides a lot of flexibility than the softwares to experiment various things.

imagining heights

What these softwares has done is, they made people look only at the fine, finished, good looking drawings give more importance than the process of making those or the idea behind them. Many tend to avoid sketching fearing that it will not turn out good looking but what this does is they miss the whole point of sketching that is to explore and experiment with the ides and understand them properly and not look at them as finished products.

Sketching is something for you to express and seeing what develops through !
